Hungarian Sports Betting

Sports betting was legalized in Hungary in 1991. The state-owned company Szerencsejáték Zrt. previously held a monopoly on sports betting, but the new legislation allows private operators to enter the market. There are both fixed-odds and pool betting options. From 2014 until 2022 Szerencsejáték de facto monopolized online sports betting; however, from 1 January 2023, amendments to the Gambling Act (Act XXVIII of 2022) opened online sports betting to EEA-based private operators holding a SARA license, ending the state monopoly.
